People who have had IVF or fertility treatment share their fertility treatment success stories and pass on their tips and motivation to other infertile couples, looking for little help.

IVF can be an emotional stress giving process of infertility treatment. Both partners should be prepared to respond to a variety of emotionally stressful demands as they undergo IVF. Despite the stressful consequences of infertility and IVF, the vast majority of patients adjust well emotionally. To minimise the stress level during treatment one should gather information about the treatment and plan ahead, prepare for decision making and identify stress giving things and find the ways to cope up with it. The 10-14 day waiting period between transfer and receiving the pregnancy test results is often described as the most difficult stress giving part of the cycle.

In Vitro Fertilization is a one assisted reproductive technology (ART) commonly referred to as IVF. IVF is the process of fertilization by manually combining an egg and sperm in a laboratory dish, and then transferring the embryo to the uterus. Other forms of ART include gamete intrafallopian transfer (GIFT) and zygote intrafallopian transfer (ZIFT).

coping with stress during ivf

Coping with stress during IVF Treatment

IVF can help you get pregnant if you have problems with ovulation or egg quality, blocked fallopian tubes, or endometriosis; if your partner has problems with sperm count or motility; or if you’re using donor eggs to become pregnant.

It takes about four to six weeks to complete one cycle of IVF. You have to wait a few weeks for your eggs to mature. Then you and your partner spend about half a day at your doctor’s office or clinic having your eggs retrieved and fertilized. You have to go back again three to five days later to have the embryos inserted into your uterus, but you’ll be able to go home that same day. Finally you have to wait till the pregnancy test is taken.

To have own children is insatiable human need. This strong natural urge exerts tremendous pressure on couples unable to have a baby. And the pressure to reproduce becomes increasingly acute as couples grow older and become more aware of their own mortality. The introduction of In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) more than 30 years ago has made parenthood possible for millions who otherwise would never have been able to conceive.

The biggest decision an infertile couple will ever make in regard to IVF is whether or not they really want to become parents. An IVF procedure requires an enormous emotional commitment at each level of the treatment, whether or not IVF is successful. Stress is one of those paradoxes of living with infertility. Both partners should be prepared to respond to a variety of emotionally stressful demands as they undergo IVF. It turns out that stress and tension, while detrimental to overall health, may have little impact on couples’ chances of getting pregnant with in vitro fertilization. ONE in five couples who give up fertility treatment does so because of the psychological and physical burden of the process, rather than the expense, according to a major study of assisted reproductive technology. While researchers once thought that stress caused infertility, more recent studies do not make this connection.

While general assumptions may be made about stress levels during IVF, the experience for infertility patients will be personal and unique–each patient will experience the stress differently based upon his or her own personality and life experiences.

The emotional stress during IVF Journey

Unexpected Challenges

The treatment of IVF stressful and affect all parts of couples life – marital, social, physical, emotional, financial, and religious. Time is stressful, both in the time commitment to an intense treatment which leads to disruption in family, work, and social activities, and for some, in long waiting periods for treatment services. Couples also may find themselves stretched financially, paying for the high cost of IVF treatment with a somewhat limited probability of success. Dealing with the medical staff and with the side effects or potential complications of medical treatment has its own stress: hot flashes, headaches, mood fluctuations, injections, sonograms, future health concerns, and decision making about embryos, their disposition and multiple pregnancies. IVF is more stressful if dealing is with third party reproduction.

The first treatment cycle of IVF is more stressful for patients, with the possibility of high levels of confusion, bewilderment and anxiety. This is because of the new experience with an unfamiliar medical process, medications and treatment protocols that can change during the cycle, and possibly working with a new team of healthcare professionals. In one complete cycle of ivf there are different stages of treatment like monitoring, oocyte retrieval, fertilization, embryo transfer, waiting period, and pregnancy test stages. The level of stress, anxiety, and anticipation rises with each stage, peaking during the waiting period. Amongst all the stages waiting to hear the outcome of the embryo transfer is the most stressful, followed by waiting to hear whether fertilization has occurred and then the egg retrieval stage. Patients are aware of the importance of these key phases in the IVF process, and the uncertainty of the outcome is often highly distressing.

Coping Strategies

Despite the stressful consequences of infertility and IVF, the vast majority of patients adjust well emotionally. Further, there seems to be no long-term impact on the marital relationship and individual functioning. In fact, some research has shown that the crisis of infertility may actually improve marital communication and emotional intimacy. Couples may learn coping skills and communication patterns that provide life-long benefit. Those individuals who do develop uncomfortable anxiety or depression symptoms should opt for counselling. IVF has the potential to be an emotionally, physically, and financially exhausting experience.

If you are a patient about to begin an IVF cycle, here are some tips to help you get ready for IVF while minimizing stress level during the process of IVF:

  1. Gather information and plan ahead: Good decision-making involves being well educated and informed about your body, the IVF process, and your clinic/treatment program. IVF is an anxiety-producing experience, and one of the best antidotes for anxiety is information and knowledge. The more you know and understand about the process, the less stress you may feel. Look for articles and other reading materials about IVF. Take advantage of resources from your treatment centre, talk to others who have been through IVF and consider seeking their support.
  2. Prepare for decision-making: It is important to anticipate decisions that may occur during IVF and discuss your options ahead of time. Sometimes these decisions may have moral and religious implications that you will need to consider and discuss. You will need to decide, along with your physician, how many embryos will be transferred while maximizing your chances for pregnancy and minimizing the possibility of multiple babies. You will also need to decide what you will do with extra eggs and/or embryos, i.e. freeze, dispose of, or donate them. If there is a possibility that donor gametes (sperm or egg) will be used in the cycle, it is important that you carefully discuss the issues involved in raising a donor-conceived child before starting the cycle. Counselling can assist you in exploring these issues and is recommended in the treatment guideline of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine.
  3. Tend to your psyche and your relationships: A long struggle with infertility may have taken a toll on how you are feeling about yourself, your marital relationship, and/or your relationship with others, causing distress and isolation. You will want to be in a good place emotionally and have your relationship on solid ground before starting an IVF cycle. Facilitate communication with your partner by setting a limited amount of time to talk about IVF, such as 20 minutes a day, and then putting infertility talk aside. Discuss ahead of time your hopes and expectations of each other during the cycle. For example, whether you want to be together at appointments, on the day of the pregnancy test, and when you are expecting a call from the doctor. Counselling can be very helpful when you and/or your partner are feeling depressed, unusually anxious, emotionally stuck or in a rut. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, so get help early before problems arise.

Minimise stress during the Two Week Wait of IVF Cycle

Minimise stress during the Two Week Wait of IVF Cycle

  1. Garner your support: Friends and family can be your best support or they can be your worst. Decide in advance whom you will like to inform about your treatment and seek support and whom you will not be telling. It’s better not to disclose to many as it sometimes adds to the pressure. Let everyone know when you are ready to inform about what is going on. In addition, look outside your usual support network to those who truly understand other infertility patients. Consider joining an IVF support group, or check out other infertility self-help organizations. The internet also is a ready source of infertility support and information, through various websites and chat rooms. A great deal of healing can come from others who understand.
  2. Identify your stresses and your coping mechanisms: Each person experiences stress in different ways, so it is helpful to identify where yours may come from. For some, it may be in just getting to the clinic in the morning for monitoring, for others it may be injections. Anticipating ahead where your stresses may come from will help in developing coping strategies. Know yours and your partner’s styles for dealing with stress and what has helped in the past. It is not unusual for each member of a couple to react differently to stress. For example, women may need to talk and receive support, while men may prefer to be involved in an activity or hobby to cope. Stress management classes, listening to relaxation tapes and other mind/body techniques used regularly can help in handling these feelings and dealing with treatment procedures. Of course, all of the above applies to single individuals undergoing IVF as well.
  3. Decide what you have control over and what you don’t: To help eliminate any unnecessary stress, you will want to make you life as simple as possible during the cycle. This is not a time to make important decisions or changes in your life, such as a move or job change. If at all possible, avoid major undertakings at work that can add stress to your life. In addition, you will want to think about how to deal with other daily life challenges on the job, at home, and with family and friends. You do have control over the choices you make in your daily life while how the treatment course progresses is usually out of your hands.
  4. Anticipate problem areas: Plan for possible changes and difficult times during your cycle, such as the waiting period after transfer and the day you will get the results. Expect the unexpected, as changes are frequently made in the cycle because of everyone’s unique medical situation. There are possibilities for failure at every step of the cycle, from a poor response to medication to no fertilization after retrieval.
Minimise stress during the Two Week Wait of IVF Cycle

Minimise stress during the Two Week Wait of IVF Cycle

The 10-14 day waiting period between transfer and receiving the pregnancy test results is often described as the most difficult part of the cycle. During the IVF cycle you are constantly on monitoring with your ivf specialist and once the embryo is transferred, you have to wait for your pregnant test. This period is very stressful as you are filled with lots of anxiety, fear and hope. One has to be ready for all the possibilities- positive pregnancy test or negative pregnancy test.

The IVF process is stressful and since in general per egg retrieval, there is at least as great a chance of not being successful, it is essential for IVF patients and their partners to be realistic about the prospects – to be guardedly optimistic but to prepare themselves emotionally so that they are not overwhelmed by failure in case IVF does not succeed.

Both partners should be prepared to respond to a variety of emotionally stressful demands as they undergo IVF. The decision to pursue fertility treatment is never easy. That is why you need a fertility centre with the proven ability to succeed – a trusted partner that delivers results to thousands of patients every year. What is surrogacy?

Surrogacy is an arrangement in which woman  carries and delivers child for another couple or person.

Surrogacy is a form of assisted reproductive treatment (ART) in which a woman carries a child in her uterus on behalf of another person or couple. A surrogacy arrangement or surrogacy agreement is the carrying of a pregnancy for intended parents. A surrogate mother is someone who conceives, carries and gives birth to a child for another person or couple (intended parents or commissioning parents). The surrogate mother agrees to give the child to that person or couple after the birth. Intended parents may seek a surrogacy arrangement when either pregnancy is medically impossible or pregnancy risks present an unacceptable danger to the mother’s health. Monetary compensation may or may not be involved in these arrangements. If the surrogate receives compensation beyond reimbursement of medical and other reasonable expenses, the arrangement is considered commercial surrogacy; otherwise, it is referred to as altruistic. The legality and costs of surrogacy vary widely between jurisdictions, sometimes resulting in interstate or international surrogacy arrangements.

There are two main types of surrogacy, gestational surrogacy and traditional surrogacy. In gestational surrogacy, the pregnancy results from the transfer of an embryo created by in vitro fertilization (IVF), in a manner so the resulting child is genetically unrelated to the surrogate. Gestational surrogates are also referred to as gestational carriers. In traditional surrogacy, the surrogate is impregnated naturally or artificially, but the resulting child is genetically related to the surrogate.

Is surrogacy for me?

Surrogacy may be appropriate, if you have a medical condition that makes it impossible or dangerous to achieve pregnancy & to give birth, which includes,

  • Absence or non-development of womb
  • Recurrent IVF Failure (implantation failure) OR recurrent miscarriages
  • Intrauterine adhesions
  • Life threatening medical conditions involving heart, liver or blood diseases, in which pregnancy is contraindicated.

For any surrogacy arrangement there needs to be intended parents, surrogate mother, egg donor and the sperm donor as the case may be. If either of the parent is not able to contribute his sperm or her egg then the help of the donor will be taken. Surrogate mothers role is very important and crucial in the whole process of surrogacy. Due care and search must be taken before selecting a surrogate mother.

Surrogacy clinic like ours have a very meticulous and stringent criteria for choosing a surrogate. Most of the surrogates are married and have children. However, for some exceptional cases, there are few who are widows and have children and are willing to do surrogacy. This is done on the requirement of certain clients whose country’s laws allow easier return of the baby with the intended parents if the child is born to a surrogate mother who is single.

Going for surrogacy is a very big decision. It involves lot of ethical, moral, and also financial issues. This is the reason you need to be very careful while taking a step ahead in choosing surrogates. The surrogacy is a very expensive process too. But for your knowledge there are also affordable surrogacy options available in many places. There are few countries where the cost of surrogacy is not that high as it is in some countries. So those who are willing to go for affordable surrogacy can think of surrogacy abroad.

India has become the top international surrogacy destination for couples and even single men and women who have not been able to have children through natural means. The success of the procedure in India, is greatly attributed to the cutting edge technology adopted by the fertility clinics in India, highly qualified fertility specialists, social acceptance of surrogacy, and low cost of surrogacy, all leading to India’s high success rate in gestational surrogacy.

Get Pregnant: Helpful Tips to Getting Pregnant

Having a child in today’s world isn’t as easy as it may seem for a lot of people. Infertility can be caused by a variety of environmental and genetic complications. For most couples, making the decision to begin building a family is a fun and exciting time. You spend late nights up laughing together and formulating baby names as you imagine the magic yet to come. In those early months, the act of trying can actually infuses passion and romance into your relationship. The first cycle or two of negative pregnancy tests don’t even seem to matter, because when you have no reason to believe anything might be wrong, you just assume it will happen eventually. As more months pass without happy news, however, the fun and excitement begins to fade; replaced now by stress, disappointment and worries.

Accepting the fact that you suffer from infertility is heart-wrenching. The fact that family building will be difficult in all terms like biologically, emotionally, financially and socially gives you a feeling as though you are being failed by your own body. Even with a diagnosis and treatment plan in place, many women and couples still struggle to regain that sense of stability which is regularly lost at the hands of infertility.

In today’s time, most of the time female infertility is related to the age factor. Women’s are prolonging the motherhood for one or the other reason like career, financial strength and search for the better partner. By the time all goals are achieved biological clock in the women starts ticking. It becomes too late to start pregnancy naturally. Then there is no other option to seek help of assisted reproductive technology like IVF, ICSI, IUI, Egg Donor, Cryopreservation and others.

When a couple plans for a baby it is important that apart from spending quality time with your spouse other few important things must also be considered. Normally people wait for the conception to happen and then after trying for sometime if they fail they will seek specialist help. Along the path to baby making there may be some things you can do that can vastly increase your chances of successfully conceiving. Although some may be more drastic than others, it’s a small price to pay for enlightening your future. Following must be considered.

Chemical Interactions on Human Body

Toxic chemicals can do a variety of damage within the body. A large portion of this damage is silent and may not manifest itself immediately. In many situations, pesticides and petroleum-based products can cause infertility for both men and women. Environmental contaminants are recognized hazards to reproductive health. An unprecedented study has revealed that the chemicals in everyday products including sunscreen, toothpaste and soap, could be damaging human sperm. Common chemical additives found in sunscreens, food packaging, toothpaste and toys can harm sperm and may affect the fertility of some couples, scientists say. If you’re trying to conceive a child, it may be best to stay away from harsh chemicals and eat more organic foods.

Possible Foods and Beverages to Avoid

It has been found that food can greatly impact the ability to reproduce and has been discovered in both men and women alike. Some food products are more potent at improving fertilization than others and can affect the results of conception for up to 90 days. According to Hethir Rodriguez C.H. at Natural Fertility Info, women who ate more proteins from plants than animals were more likely to reproduce. A major factor in this Harvard study was the reduction of consuming Tran’s fats. The foods that you consume on a daily basis can affect your fertility in both positive and negative ways. It’s common knowledge that eating a diet full of fat and calories will negatively affect your body and your fertility, but did you also know that eating a diet that is too strict can also negatively affect your fertility? The drinks that you are consuming every day can also affect your fertility in both positive and negative ways. There are a few simple food tips that everyone can follow to help improve fertility and boost the chances of successfully conceiving. Eat balanced diet, limit the consumption of caffeine, drink alcohol sparingly, take folic supplements and avoid tobacco consumption and intake through inhaling the smoke of tobacco.

Avoiding Allergens on the Path of Pregnancy

Reducing your interaction with things that produce allergic reactions can improve your chances of having a baby. It’s believed that your immune system may be capable of doing its job all too well leading to miscarry upon fertilization. Allergies to food have also been linked to anti-sperm capabilities reducing the male’s capacity to fertilize an egg. If you are allergic or sensitive to certain things avoid it during the time of conception.

Sexual Transmitted Diseases and its Effects

Some STDs have the capacity to render a person’s reproductive system inert. For instance, Chlamydia infections can cause abnormalities and sperm antibodies in men while scarring and blocking fallopian tubes within women. Even though you may not be showing signs of various diseases, these could be wreaking havoc on you internally. Chlamydia and gonorrhea are important preventable causes of pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) and infertility. Untreated, about 10-15% of women with chlamydia will develop PID. Chlamydia can also cause fallopian tube infection without any symptoms. PID and “silent” infection in the upper genital tract may cause permanent damage to the fallopian tubes, uterus, and surrounding tissues, which can lead to infertility. Getting regular checkups for younger women’s below the age of 25 years and those opting for pregnancy is very beneficial especially since many of these complications could lay dormant for several years before manifesting themselves.

Sperm Donors for Male Infertility

When the reason for infertility is male factor and low sperm count or no sperm at all then donor sperm treatment is at the rescue of infertile couple. There are a lot of men that are affected by low motility and decreased sperm counts. If all else fails, donor programs are available to help conceive a child. You can purchase vials of sperm and have them quickly shipped to you. This provides social anonymity and helps keep the process private, which is helpful if you feel embarrassed by having complications such as these. In short time, you can begin the process of having your own child while using a donor’s sperm.

Donor insemination is a simple procedure that uses a syringe to place semen into a woman’s vagina to assist her in getting pregnant. The semen is normally obtained from someone other than the woman’s husband or partner. With the newer technology and success of the ICSI procedure that enables a single sperm to be manually inserted into the woman’s egg versus a complete semen collection, donor insemination is becoming less common.

Increase Fertility, Fertility Treatments, Male & Female Infertility

Following are the recommended ways to optimize Your Health and Fertility and it includes

1) Getting enough sleep. Odd sleep and wake cycles can throw off your menstrual cycle, which is unlikely to lead to infertility but could make getting pregnant fast more difficult.

2) Eating a balanced diet and drinking enough water. Shun extreme diets or binging when you’re trying to conceive.

3) Lowering stress may help you conceive faster. Acute stress can throw off your menstrual cycle.

4) For the men, it is recommended to keep away from hot tubs, laptops placed directly on the lap, seat warmers, and sitting too long with the legs close together. It can all increase the scrotal temperatures, which can negatively impact sperm counts.

5) Washing your hands and staying away from sick people. Illness can throw off your cycle.

6) Cut down on caffeine and alcohol drinks – this is for the men and the women both. Quit smoking too.

It is not an easy job to follow the recommendations but not difficult if it is not only improving your health now but also helping you have a healthier pregnancy and be a good example to your future child.

There are other things you can do to improve your fertility and overall health that take more effort and time. A big one is making sure your weight falls within healthy limits. Being just slightly overweight has been shown to decrease fertility.

There are many complications that can prevent someone from conceiving a child. While some can be circumvented easily, others may require a more in-depth analysis into reproductive treatments. These methods are substantiated by scientific evidence, but there is no guarantee that they will work for you. Each person is different and what works for one may not work for another. It is just a guideline that will help intending parents to conceive faster.

Fibroids, Fertility and Pregnancy – Do uterine fibroids cause infertility and should they be removed to increase fertility? – can fibroids make it difficult to get pregnant? – Uterine Fibroid Symptoms and Complications Treatment in Surat Gujarat – How do fibroids affect Pregnancy – fertility? – Learn how fibroids affect fertility in this article -Fibroids and infertility – an updated systematic review of the evidence – Treatment Options for Fibroids of Uterus – Fibroids and Pregnancy

Fibroids are non-cancerous tumors of the uterus (womb). Fibroids grow out of the cells that make up your uterus. Uterine fibroids (also called myomas or leiomyomas) are benign (noncancerous) tumors of muscle tissue that can change the shape or size of the uterus and sometimes the cervix. They start in the smooth muscle cells inside the wall of the uterus (myometrium). Fibroids usually occur in the form of multiple tumors, although single fibroids are sometimes possible. Fibroids can be as small as a pea or as large as a football. Having uterine fibroids does not increase your risk of cancer. They are almost always benign, no matter how large they get.

Fibroids and Pregnancy

Fibroids and Pregnancy

The fact that approximately 20% to 50% of women suffer from the symptoms generated by fibroid tumors at some stage of their lives suggests that they are quite common growths in the reproductive system of a woman. Age is a factor. Fibroids are more common in women who are 35 years of age or older. Women under the age of 20 rarely have fibroids. These tumors of the uterus tend to shrink after menopause. Studies indicate that black women are nine times more susceptible to fibroids than white women. Furthermore, women who are overweight are more likely to have fibroids because of higher levels of estrogen. No one knows exactly what causes uterine fibroids. But the hormones that regulate your periods, particularly estrogen, are known to play a part. Fibroids increase in size slowly over the years. But when estrogen level in the body rises the rate of growth increases. The exact cause of uterine fibroids is unclear, but there is evidence that it may be a combination of genetic, hormonal, and environmental factors.

Not all fibroids are the same, and they’re categorised based on where they are located. Fibroids are usually found in or around the body of the uterus, but they sometimes occur in the cervix. Fibroids within the uterus can be divided into three categories: subserous (located in the outer wall of the uterus); intramural (found in the muscular layers of the uterine wall); and submucous (protruding into the uterine cavity). In addition, fibroids can be connected to the uterus through a stalk (pedunculated), or fibroids can be attached to nearby organs, like the bladder and bowel, or the ligaments surrounding the uterus. About 55% of fibroids are subserosal; 40% are intramural; and 5% are submucosal. Fibroids are rarely found outside the pelvic cavity.

Large intramural fibroids may alter the blood flow to the uterine lining and may also alter the shape of the uterine cavity. Subserosal fibroids usually don’t alter the shape of the uterine cavity, but when large can cause discomfort. The only type that is supposed to have a large impact on reproductive function (unless they are large or numerous) is the submucous type that pushes in to the uterine cavity. These are much less common than the other 2 types of fibroids. Because of their location inside the uterine cavity, submucous fibroids can cause fertility problems and miscarriages. Submucous fibroids can often be surgically resected to improve fertility.

Treatment Options for Fibroids of Uterus

Diagnosis of the Fibroids: Fibroids are very common. About 25 percent of women in their childbearing years will have signs of fibroids that can be detected by a pelvic examination, although not all will experience symptoms. Your medical history and a pelvic exam are necessary in diagnosing fibroids. Listed below are tests that may also be used to confirm the diagnosis:

1) Ultrasound – a scan that uses high frequency sound waves to detect fibroids in and around the uterus and cervix

2) Hysterosalpingogram – a procedure that uses x-rays and a special dye to detect fibroids on the inside of your uterus and to see if your fallopian tubes are open

3) Hysteroscopy – a procedure in which your doctor uses a narrow fiber optic telescope inserted into the uterine cavity to look for and sometimes remove fibroids

4) Laparoscopy – a procedure in which your doctor uses a narrow fiber optic telescope inserted through an incision near your navel to look for and sometimes remove fibroids

What symptoms are experienced if fibroids exist?

The severity of symptoms will depend on the number, size, and location of the fibroids. You may experience severe, painful cramps and abnormal or excessive bleeding, especially during your periods. Also, you may have difficulty with moving your bowels or urinating if you have fibroids that are putting pressure on your rectum or bladder. Hemorrhoids may also develop if you become constipated. However, if your fibroids are small, you may not have any symptoms at all. In fact, you may not know that you have fibroids until you go through infertility testing.

What treatments are available to cure fibroids?

Fibroids can be treated surgically or with medications. Fibroids can be removed during a laparoscopy, hysteroscopy, or through an open incision (myomectomy). Medications that stop or interfere with your body’s estrogen production are used to shrink fibroids and prevent them from growing larger. Once the medication is stopped, the fibroids will regrow. Medication is mainly used for treatment prior to surgery.

However, you can only use these medications for a few months – long-term use may increase your risk of bone loss. Keep in mind that treatments do not provide a cure – new fibroids can grow after treatment. Most fibroids are usually small, asymptomatic, and don’t require treatment. These benign tumors only need close gynecological observation to document changes in size or the early onset of symptoms.

Fibroids and infertility – an updated systematic review of the evidence

Fibroid Symptoms

Common symptoms associated to fibroids are back pain, abdominal pressure or discomfort, urinary frequency, rectal pressure or discomfort, and periods that can be painful, heavy and prolonged, Difficulty emptying your bladder and constipation. Rarely, a fibroid can cause acute pain when it outgrows its blood supply.

Does fibroid decrease fertility?

Uterine fibroids are common, and they are found in 5-10% of infertile women. When all other causes of infertility are excluded fibroids may account for only 2 to 3% of infertility cases. Certain types of fibroids are known to decrease fertility. They include fibroids that are inside the uterine cavity and very large fibroids (>6 cm in diameter) that are located within the wall of the uterus. Because most women with fibroids will not be infertile, they and their partners should have a thorough evaluation to detect other problems that can decrease fertility. A fertility specialist can help determine if fibroids might be hampering their ability to conceive.

There are several explanations for why uterine fibroids may reduce fertility.

1)   Changes in the position of the cervix due to fibroids located above it may affect the number of sperm that can travel through the cervix.

2)   Changes in the shape of the uterus can interfere with sperm movement.

3)   Blockage of the fallopian tubes by the fibroids.

4)     Affecting the blood flow to the uterine cavity where the embryo would implant.

5)    Changes in the uterine muscle that prevents movement of the sperm or the embryo.

If you have a fibroid problem, there are several treatments to consider. Fibroids can be surgically removed, the blood supply to fibroids can be cut off, the entire uterus can be removed, or medicine can temporarily shrink fibroids. Your choice will depend on whether you have severe symptoms and whether you want to preserve your fertility. If you have uterine fibroids but you have few or no symptoms, you don’t need treatment. Instead, your doctor will recommend watchful waiting. This means that you will have regular pelvic exams to check on fibroid growth and symptoms. Talk with your doctor about how often you will need a checkup. If you are nearing menopause, watchful waiting may be an option for you, depending on how tolerable your symptoms are. After menopause, your estrogen and progesterone levels will drop, which causes most fibroids to shrink and symptoms to subside.

Fibroids and Pregnancy

It is an impression that fibroids contribute to infertility and there are instances that shows that previously infertile women conceived after their fibroids had been removed. However there are no   strong evidence of causation, so whether fibroids do cause infertility, and therefore whether they should be removed, is still uncertain.

A couple consults Infertility Specialist when they are unable to get pregnant without use of any contraceptives for one year. To be pregnant sperm and egg of human being are required. Sperm and egg should meet to form embryo and that embryo should stick to the uterus wall and should not miscarry (miscarriage). If conception is not taking place because of any of this reaons, it is the time to seek advise of the fertility doctor.

A visit to the infertility or fertility doctor is never pleasant. The couple who faces problem in conceiving or is unable to become pregnant after 1 year of having sex without using birth control or a woman older than 35 who has been unable to become pregnant after about 6 months of sex without using birth control should think of consulting a fertility specialist at the earliest. If a woman had three or more miscarriages in a row then also it is advisable to consult a fertility doctor as early as possible. Females diagnosed with cancer during reproductive years who desire to preserve their ability to have children should also seek assistance of fertility specialist. Also, anyone for whom there is a known or suspected risk factor for infertility should seek medical advice once they decide to start a family.

When to call the fertility doctor?

Normally when you are ready to start building up your family you stop using contraceptives of all kinds and start taking home pregnancy test to check out for possible pregnancy. A few months go by and nothing happens and then its the time you start to worry. Consult with your primary care physician or gynecologist and do the basic testing done. Once your primary care physician rules out disease and you’ve been having intercourse during your fertile days for at least one year, a fertility evaluation should be initiated. Her evaluation will include blood tests, ultrasonography and hysterosalpingography (HSG). His evaluation will include a semen analysis.

Based on the results, your primary physician may recommend a treatment plan. Women may be prescribed medications to induce ovulation. If pregnancy is not achieved after three cycles, women should be referred to a fertility specialist.

If test results indicate a blockage in the fallopian tubes, abnormal uterus, abnormal sperm or low sperm count, couples should consult with a fertility specialist immediately as they may be candidates for in vitro fertilization (IVF) or intrauterine insemination (IUI). It is very important to take a call and visit infertility or fertility doctor at the right time before it is too late. The age of the female partner must be considered in delaying or making an appointment with the fertility specialist.

Normally to be pregnant sperm and egg of human being are required. Sperm and egg should meet to form embryo and that embryo should stick to the uterus wall and should not miscarry (miscarriage). That means following 4 categories decide whether you need an expertise of fertility doctor.

Eggs

The most important thing to know is whether you are you ovulating? If your periods are not at all regular, you may not be ovulating on your own. Ovulation predictor kits and temperature charting may provide some evidence that an egg is being released. But the only way to actually know whether you ovulate is when you get pregnant. If you are not ovulating you can have issue with egg supply or ovarian reserve. The life span of your ovaries may be concerning either because of age, a family history of early menopause, or illness that could affect your egg reserve, such as treatment for an earlier cancer. A fertility specialist will address these issues on the first visit.

Sperm

The reason a couple may struggle to get pregnant can sometimes be linked to problems with the sperm. Find out if there is a history of trauma or surgery on the testicles, or a history of major illness such as a cancer that required powerful medications. Even a history of aggressive exercising, especially weight lifting, or very competitive sports can hint at an issue with the sperm count. A semen analysis is a simple test that can be obtained without even consulting a fertility doctor, although you may need one to interpret the results. This testing is done at the fertility doctors clinic only in a private and secure environment designed to put the men at ease. It is an important first step because 20-30% of all untested couples that walk into the door of fertility clinic have a “male factor” as the primary cause of their difficulties.

Can they Meet?

A woman usually produces a single follicle each month as a result of various hormonal changes. An egg or oocyte usually develops within this follicle, and once mature, is released. The oocyte is then picked up, and moved along the fallopian tubes, towards the uterus. Sperm deposited in the vagina around this time, swim up into the uterus and into the fallopian tubes to meet and fertilise the egg. The fertilised egg then implants in the uterus and grows. However many a times fertilisation of eggs does not take place and no pregnancy takes place. The reason of egg and sperm not meeting may include a history of pelvic infection (especially chlamydia), prior abdominal surgery, painful periods, pain during sex and heavy bleeding and clotting during menstrual periods. A fertility doctor will focus on these clues while a general physician may not be able to diagnose it and may put you on fertility drugs which will not help if your fallopian tubes are blocked.

Can they Stick?

During fertilisation, the genetic material in the sperm and egg combine to create a new cell that will rapidly start dividing. This bundle of new cells is known as the blastocyst. It continues travelling down the fallopian tube towards the uterus, a journey which can take another three days or so. You are not actually pregnant until the blastocyst has attached itself to the wall of your uterus, where it will develop into an embryo and placenta. Occasionally, the blastocyst will implant somewhere other than the uterus (usually in the fallopian tube). This is called an ectopic pregnancy, which is a medical emergency. The pregnancy will not survive outside the uterus and needs to be completely removed, to avoid damage to the fallopian tube. When the blastocyst does not implant miscarriage takes place. If a couple is facing recurrent pregnancy loss then only fertility expert will be able to evaluate this problem. In normal circumstances the couple may suspect this is happening to them because in several months there cycle was different, had sore breasts, bleeding was late, early, heavier or lighter during menstruation.  Many times the infertile couple or their family member has an autoimmune disease such as Lupus or Rheumatoid Arthritis or has a history of a blood clot in the leg or in the lung. If so, there are tests that can be done to identify if any of these factors may be influencing your fertility. Once identified, a doctor who focuses on helping women conceive will chart out a course of action to improve your odds of success. Only fertility expert will be able to guide you in such circumstances.

Couples should not assume that infertility is the result of a medical problem. Lifestyle choices may impact fertility, such as caffeine use, stress, exercise and diet. Your physician may recommend lifestyle changes to increase fertility. Both the male and female should be evaluated. Try to use all of your options to conceive before seeking the help of a fertility specialist. There are many ways both men and women can increase their fertility naturally. Become familiar with these natural options and try to incorporate them into your daily lives. Most guidelines recommend an investigation for infertility if a woman who is under age 35 has had unprotected intercourse for 12 months or longer and has not become pregnant. Women 35 and older are recommended to wait only six months before seeking help. Some authorities advise women over 30 should start investigating after six months of trying to conceive.

If a couple is knowing the reason of infertility as mentioned above then its the time for them to consult infertility expert at the earliest. They should not wait or go for any other test and must consult the expert without wasting time.
